Jelena Bando and Marija Ujević Galetović

Following the dialogue-driven exhibition at the Frank Gallery in Vienna in November 2024, artists Jelena Bando and the late Marija Ujević Galetović (1933 – 2023) come together once again in a shared narrative framework at the Josip Račić Gallery in Zagreb. The two Zagreb-based artists create and open up a space for what the Belgian-French filmmaker and photographer Agnès Varda describes as the landscapes that make up human beings. In her cinematic autobiography “The Beaches of Agnès”, while wandering the beaches of her childhood, Varda remarks: “If we opened people up, we’d find landscapes. If opened me up, we’d find beaches.”

In her new series of oil paintings on canvas, Jelena Bando searches for her “beaches,” deeply personal spaces she discovers in Vlaška Street in Zagreb, where her studio is located. As she traverses the street daily, she views it as an extension of her own creative space. In an effort to portray the true life of the street, its residents, its history, and its present state, Bando begins researching the histories of specific buildings while also getting to know the people and their flats, which represent the most intimate spaces and reflect the individuals with whom she is just beginning to connect. The result of these parallel dialogues is a depiction of interiors intertwined with stories and anecdotes from the lives of their inhabitants in a specific space. The artist blends images of the interiors with the exterior of the building housing the flats, resulting in symbolic elements that form a kind of virtual collage, introducing an element of abstraction. The paintings, grouped under the series title “I don’t look at nature anymore”, reveal multiple layers, as the series aims to emphasise the complexity of both the building and the life of an individual within that space.

The first phase begins from the outside and progresses inward, towards the interior of each flat. After noting the structure of the façades and their forms, Bando focuses on depicting motifs and their symbolism within the private spaces. The paintings are named after the building address numbers 51 / 74 / 99a / 103 / 105, which Bando interprets through both an architectural and symbolic lens.

It is essential to highlight that in all of Jelena Bando’s previous series, her dedication to exploring the themes in each body of work is evident. In this particular series, the artist engages in conversation with the residents of the documented buildings, weaving together the broader history of the housing culture with their personal narratives. The colour combinations she uses in her medium-sized works are not merely the result of observing the chromatic compositions of individual interiors. Instead, the colours take on a psychological dimension, reflecting the tone of voice of the speakers, that is, the building residents.

This theme is also explored through an installation, created on almost six metres of paper painted with ink and pastel. Bando once again incorporates abstract motifs, drawn from the everyday view through her studio window: the Zagreb façades that shift in front of the studio, witnessing the evolving fabric of the city. In her work titled “Fractured Horizons”, Bando continues her exploration of space, creating a new kind of space within the painting that combines elements of the real world with an imagined one.1 By opting for the installation format, Jelena Bando’s distinctive style remains consistent, staying true to her signature approach and, above all, the high quality of execution.

The sculptures of Marija Ujević Galetović emerge amidst Bando’s abstract fragments. Ujević Galetović’s work titled “You Silly Goat”, loaned from a family collection, encapsulates the essence of one of Croatia’s most prominent sculptors, reflecting humour, sculptural precision, and a thoughtful cultural and philosophical message characteristic of her work.

In her distinctive style, Ujević Galetović starts from the principles of classical figurative sculpture, highlighting the monumentality and strength of the depicted figure, following the tradition of her mentor, sculptor Frano Kršinić. However, the process gradually shifts towards refining and polishing the forms, showcasing her unique contemporary approach to sculpture, treating it as a medium for exploring the relationship between form, function, and its role within a particular space and society.

Animalistic-female sculptures become her visual language, conveying messages about the position of women in society, a theme further emphasised by her pioneering role as the first female professor in the Sculpture Department at the Academy in Zagreb. In this particular piece, however, Ujević Galetović transformed a pejorative expression, typically directed exclusively at women, into a work laced with sarcasm, accentuating a woman’s ingenuity and a formed, or in this case, modelled, stance. This fusion of two figures may initially confuse the observer, but Ujević Galetović clearly underscores an element of surprise or a sense of wonder, which is a defining feature of exceptional sculpture. The sculptor has always openly acknowledged that she found more vitality in female bodies because “they encompass many more facets of life than men.”2

The dialogue between the young Zagreb artist and one of the key figures of the Zagreb art scene invites an examination of intertextuality in artistic creation, approaching the artwork as a text that is never fully isolated. According to semiotician Barthes, every text is inherently intertextual, as it contains references to previous texts and elements from the cultural and historical context. Julia Kristeva examines intertextuality as a process of ongoing interaction between texts, where continual transformation or absorption of other texts takes place. Whether consciously or unconsciously, the creator of a new work incorporates motifs and structures from texts or artworks, as well as elements from the repertoire of ideas they encountered during their education and upbringing in a particular milieu.

The often-emphasised territoriality in their work, which affirms the urban nature of their surroundings, the city of Zagreb, forms a bond between the two artists, who find themselves at this intersection: both physical and metaphysical. By positioning the two artists in a dialogue across different media, generations, and approaches, the aim is to create a unique experience that brings the legacy of one of Croatia’s most prolific sculptors to the forefront. The significant imprint she has left on the development of contemporary sculptural expression in Zagreb compels us to continue building upon and recontextualising her work. In direct conversation with Jelena Bando, whose recent work focuses on examining the contemporary reality of Zagreb, Marija Ujević Galetović’s art is articulated within a new context. This alternative perspective on her work reinforces the lasting impact of her artistic and social gesture, which boldly introduces new discourses into the city’s infrastructure, continuously shaping new Agnèsian landscapes.

1 The concept of creating a new space that merges the real and the imaginary, is a recurring theme in Jelena Bando’s previous series: Nice to meet you (2020), Real Space (2018), and The Other (2015).

	FRACTURED HORIZONS
	︎

Jelena Bando’s piece Fractured horizons is the product of a several months long process of visually
capturing an outdoor backyard the artist daily observes from her workspace. The act of conveying
the exterior into the studio interior materialises as an intimate experience of construction of
imaginary landscapes. Consciously defined and limited, the view from the studio is, in fact, a
trigger for a displacement onto floating surfaces where shapes, traces, symbols and shadows of
backyard images are only faintly recognisable. In her recent practice, Jelena Bando has embarked
on a deeper exploration of the tactile and social experience of exteriors which she brings back into
an intimate space where she interprets her lived encounters. In Fractured horizons her interest is in
the creation of warm and cold areas of perception which complement each other in the form of a
spatial installation.
Fragments of the exterior are combined in a collage-like manner, thereby coming to life as an
individual immersive experience in a fictional environment. Multiple horizons are recognisable in
the sedimenting of oversized landscapes which freely glide down vertical sheets of paper. As if they
were stage scenery, the fragments envelope the interior, blurring the borderlines between different
surfaces and creating the space for new visual and haptic stimuli. The employment of various ink
and pastel techniques broadens the perception of observed environments while layering imagined
perspectives. Gazing into space presents itself as an out-of-body sensation cadenced by ritualised
unconscious repetition of abstract symbols and signs.

	NICE TO MEET YOU
	︎

Museum of contemporary art, Zagreb / Croatia, 2020
When planning the exhibition of new works of
artist Jelena Bando at the MSU Gallery last year, we did not even begin to
realise how the exhibition Nice to meet you – which covers
the topic of personal narration, emotion, and interaction – would be responsive
to the times in which we have found ourselves, albeit not by choice, and which
have changed – somewhat abruptly and intensely – everyday life and processes of
relationships, personal experiences, and perception of the world around us. The
year 2020 will be remembered for global phenomenons that have changed our view
of that which we consider normal and implicit.

The virus, quarantine, economic
precariousness and crisis, as well as the earthquake that struck Zagreb have
strongly destabilised the pre-established way of life. In these circumstances,
we have had the opportunity to recognise and distinguish between that which is
important and that which is not; the time in which we had hitherto lived slowed
down, as well as our rhythm. As we were forced to iso- late within our own
homes, to maintain spatial distance and to refrain from interaction, a space
opened up to us of confronting fears and sup- pressed demons, which we had
skilfully kept hidden in the chaos of everyday life. In the solitude of
isolation, we were able to take a good look at ourselves and get to know
ourselves better. It proved neces- sary and important to recognise and detect
emotions provoked by the events that had created our new reality.

In the book Upheavals of Thought: The
Intelligence of Emotions, at the start of the first part, philosopher
Martha C. Nussbaum writes the following: “Emotions, I shall argue, involve
judgments about impor- tant things, judgments in which, appraising an external
object as sali- ent for our own well-being, we acknowledge our own neediness
and incompleteness before parts of the world that we do not fully control.”1 By
presenting an example from her own life, related to the loss of her mother,
Martha C. Nussbaum indicates the characteristics of emotions, “their urgency
and heat; their tendency to take over the personality and to move it to action
with overwhelming force; their connection with important attachments, in terms
of which a person defines her life; the person’s sense of passivity before
them; their apparently adversarial relation to ‘rationality’ in the sense of
cool calculation or cost-benefit analysis; their close connections with one
another, as hope alternates easily with fear, as a single event transforms hope
into grief, as grief, looking about for a cause, expresses itself as anger, as
all of these can be the vehicles of an underlying love.”2

Emotions, their understanding, the necessity
to perceive oneself and the confrontation with own vulnerabilities as the
prerequisite of connecting with ourselves and subsequently with others, have
compelled Jelena Bando to redeliberate and question such topics.

Jelena Bando has positioned herself on the
contemporary art scene through the recognisability of artistic expression, the
skilful balancing between painterly and drawing craft. In her artistic work,
she successfully evades the imposed theoretical notions by insisting on
authenticity, and embarks upon a game of reinterpretation of lived experiences.

The research of correlation and acceptance of
the Other’s diversity, i.e. the understanding of the construction of identity
in colo- nial and postcolonial contexts, has guided her to remote areas which
are threatened by the vanishing of autochthonous communities. The result of
deliberation and research of identity conditioned by geopo- litical
determinants is the cycle of works from 2016, entitled Susreti u nestajanju
/ Matches in the Disappearance, in which she focuses on the problematics of
indigenous communities from different areas. It is exactly in this work/cycle
that Bando has shown a genuine effort to deconstruct the change of own
perspective. The same period saw the production of works based on the artist’s personal
experience on inti- macy and closeness from the cycle Drugi / The Other (2015)
and Pravi prostor / A Proper Space (2016/2017). In the series A
Proper Space, there occurs the intertwining of motifs from Jelena’s
everyday life with those taken from earlier series, which served as the
foreshadowing of a kind of parting from earlier topics. The elements
highlighted in this series reproduce an imaginary landscape combined with her
actual living space that enabled the creation of a new visual world. The artist
con- structs the canvases at the border of the realistic and the imaginary; by
opting for sepulchral colours, she highlights the emotional states of everyday
life and the situations around her.

With the series of new works Nice to Meet You, Jelena addresses our vulnerability and courage to share
some of our most inti- mate feelings, which in turn renders us exposed. The
author has pre- sented portraits of her friends, who are regular visitors at
her atelier.

Jelena’s studio space, situated in the city
centre, seems to invite us to stop by this warm, luminous place, fostering
houseplants and little coffee cups shyly set up opposite the entrance to the
atelier, en route to the armchair that awaits the guests. It is exactly
these meetings and talks that motivated Jelena to produce this cycle of
paintings.

Empathy towards the interlocutor initiated
the process of painting, during which the artist connected with emotional
states of the other, seeking to illustrate that which she had recognised.

When writing on distinction and the
connection between empa- thy and the emotion of compassion in her book Upheavals
of Thought: The Intelligence of Emotions, Martha C. Nussbaum refers to
Heinz Kohut, the leading theorist of empathy within psychoanalysis, who points
out (on the basis of his extensive clinical experience) that the process of
empathy “is a valuable guide to accurate responding, an ‘informer of
appropriate action’ – appropriate not in the ethical sense, but just in the
sense of conforming to the person’s aims, whether these are beneficent or
malevolent.”3In a speech given just before he passed away, Kohut states the following
on the subject of empathy: “...empathy, per se, is a therapeutic
action in the broadest sense, a beneficial action in the broadest sense of the
word.”4

The sedimentation of experiences and its
manifestation in the emphatic approach, in the sincere listening to the other,
now becomes the centre of Jelena Bando’s artistic work.

From each of the portraits painted, Jelena singles
out a particular abstract element or detail, which she then paints enlarged
so as to fit the dimensions of the canvas. The abstract element extracts a
hidden emotion representing the inner state of the person portrayed. With such
fragmentation and singling out of details, the artist attaches significance to
certain emotional states and indicates their presence in everybody’s life. That
which is hidden becomes visible, a detail becomes the focus: courage, hope,
sadness, fear, rage, happiness. The paintings have been named after the persons
portrayed, and the enlarged detail is joined with each of the portraits. At the
exhibition, however, the paintings are not presented in pairs: it is up to
the observer to connect and join them together.

On the subject of her work and the new cycle,
the artist states the following: “That which I basically seek to address with
my work is occasionally the idea that it is not only okay, but also necessary
to immerse into oneself and into own emotions, to show vulnerability, and that
these states primarily connect us with ourselves, which ensures a path for a
deeper, more complete and more real connection with others.”

The artist seeks to subtly problematise the
states of isolation and loneliness that present inevitable reality for an
increasing number of people. The feeling of solitude – as the choice of
immersion into own inner world – is therefore dominant in this cycle.

With the new cycle, Jelena Bando continues to
form visual records in which individual pages can also function as separate
entities.

Emotions are mirrored by diverse forms, and
the framing and scaling of colours in space. At the border between realism
(portrait) and imaginary representation (of emotions), Jelena creates new
worlds of recognition and emotional identification.

Ravnikar gallery space, Ljubljana / Slovenia, 2019

Oris — House of architecture, Zagreb / Croatia, 2019

The latest series by artist Jelena Bando is a critical reflection upon her recent stay in Vietnam. In particular, through a group of drawings and paintings, Jelena attempts to report her impressions of the most popular tourist location in Vietnam – Ha Long Bay. This place of marvelous beauty and unique presence, protected as the UNESCO World Heritage site, is located in northeast Vietnam and known for thousands of towering limestone islands topped by rainforest.

In this series, Jelena addresses the reality of participating in one of the hundreds of tours and expeditions that invade this spectacular bay on a daily basis: a profound and unexpected delicacy of the destination invaded by a suffocating number of tourist boats, barges and kayaks. The inevitable sense of disappointment is present on both ends: as a tourist in search of a promised ‘natural paradise’ but participating in a rushed and crowded visit, and as a human being responsible for the preservation of natural beauty and wealth but witnessing unsustainability and destructive impact that mass tourism has on the environment and the local community. Her personal experience ignited a myriad of questions regarding the human relationship with nature upon which she based this series. This topic has been focus of Jelena’s artistic expression for several years, but this time she approached it from a somewhat different angle.

Her works aim to deliver the very real delicacy with which entire Ha Long Bay radiates. Jelena is primarily dedicated to capturing the particular texture and fragile structure of the islands with intricacy and complexity of her strokes. Moreover, the artist uses rice paper for some of the works in order to further highlight the fragility of limestone islands in the bay. A gentle blue, green and emerald tones display the overall impression of this dense cluster of islands rising from the ocean covered in jungle vegetation. A feeling of unrest and unease is present in each piece, indicating the threat of irreversible damage that could be inflicted by constant and unlimited flocks of visitors.

	A PROPER SPACE
	︎

Oil on canvas, 130 × 170 cm, 2016./2017. Gallery Prsten (HDLU) / Zagreb

Painting is a medium that provides an artist with numerous possibilities, among which is creating a unique system of signs, that is, a visual language shaped by the artist. Such a unique system of symbols, signs and forms, which we can also call Jelena Bando’s visual world, is, both in terms of research and visual vocabulary, focused on the Other. This relationship with the Other, that the contemporary theory defines as a concept that problematizes the interaction of one person with another, but also as the issue of temporally and spatially remote communication between cultures, became the main topic of her work. However, in order to familiarize you with this fascination, we should refer to some of her earlier series of works. The series of works titled “The Other“was a result of research directly driven by her personal experience of the culture of the Other, of the association of immigrants from Guadalupe Island she met in Paris. This encounter became the topic that the artist built upon by placing these selected characters, members of some other culture, into imaginary landscapes, constructing thus her own view of the Other. Already in the following series of works, “Encounters in Disappearance”, the artist selected endangered communities, whose traditional way of life might be threatened by external influences, in order to express her own view of such potential transformation. This time, she met the Other and selected communities exclusively through various media (the Internet, books, photographs…), and fictionally initiated encounters with them through drawings in which she articulated her own comment on the observed situation. Imaginary landscape was still present. However, with the series of works A Proper Space the artist makes a semantic shift. This time she elaborates her own view of the Other by replacing the imaginary landscape with her real living space. In this subtle balance on the verge of real and imaginary she creates a new visual language, again full of uncanny and realistic reference points, such as human figures, plants and animals. This time, the so often mentioned Other has found his safe place in the artist’s pleasant everyday, in the interior of her apartment, surrounded by real motives from her life.

Throughout the history, the relationship between different civilisations has been marked by incomprehension and conflicts rather than by curiosity and cooperation. Relying on the concept of the Other, within the Western civilisation there is an entire field of science dealing with that relationship. To put it very simply, the Other is anyone or anything that cannot be explained through the familiar, established value system. The encounter with the Other is always preceded by a long, strenuous journey, whether a real or imaginary one. When it comes to Marco Polo's, Christopher Columbus's, James Cook's or the Seljan brothers' encounter with the Other, we know almost everything. When it comes to Jelena Bando's and Ivan Prerad's encounter with the Other, we will discover something at this exhibition.

In the history of Modern art, the Other played a short, but prominent role. Around the turn of the twentieth century, the so-called primitive art of the African, Oceanian and Far Eastern peoples changed the manner in which we observe the world through the works of European artists. Whether it is the influence of Japanese prints on the works of Toulouse-Lautrec, the Gauguin's portrayal of life in the Polynesian islands or the influence of African masks on Picasso's art – e.g. on the key painting of Europeanavant-garde “The Young Ladies of Avignon” – each time, we witness the fruitful contact of European art with the art of the so-called New World.

In the age of technological globalisation and instant communication, what is the destiny of the Other? What is happening with the cultures of other and far-away peoples today? Is it possible that the Other has lost its exotic identity nowadays? Having conquered, measured, mapped and digitalised the “New World”, how do we Europeans see it today?

The paintings by Jelena Bando and Ivan Prerad presented in this exhibition imply that there is still some latent and creative tension between different cultures. But even more than that, maybe the paintings of these young artists suggest to us that the Other, either real or made up, is something without which the art would not make too much sense.

Drawing “Matches in the disappearance” deals with the problem of indigenous communities historically tied to a certain territory. Triptych exposes three different geographically positioned communities: Achuar from the Amazon rainforest on the border of Ecuador and Peru, tribe Mursi from Ethiopia and Tsaatan – nomadic cattlemen from Mongolia. Despite spatial dislocation, these three tribes are tied together by lifestyle tightly intertwined with nature and common teaching about life after death. Politically more dominant and opposing in worldview, western culture has been settling, occupying or colonizing a number of areas thereby inflicting their own aspects of culture and often threatening the sovereignty of original inhabitants. This work is a certain reflection upon mentioned social events; an expression of benevolence and indication of possible end with an invitation for subjective interpretation. Motives such as human figure, animals and plants which are connection points of the three mentioned tribes serve as stepping stones upon which the narrative is built. They take place on three large scale papers. Material which is collected through indirect artistic research have been freely interpreted and placed within the personal imaginative space of the artist. Various techniques applied with a general pale tone suggest a feeling of disappearance and fading.

Mountains are a true geological wonder. They result from violent collisions of continental masses that occurred in immemorial times. They have a powerful impact on the human psyche: they often illustrated the place of the divine in Greek and Roman mythology, in the Bible and in a lot of religions. I feel deeply influenced by these tectonic figures, and wanted to pay them a tribute in my work. In the following series, in drew nine of the biggest mountains in the world: Cho Oyu, Mount Olympus, Mount Rainier, Aconcagua, Dhaulagiri, Kangchenjunga, Matterhorn, Mount Fuji and K2.
